Highest ‘Injury To Feelings’ Award Given In Age Case

17 April, 2009

The highest damages so far awarded by an Employment Tribunal for ‘injury to feelings’ has been given to an NHS manager who last week won her claim for age discrimination.

The Leeds Employment Tribunal awarded Linda Sturdy the maximum damages of £33,500 for injury to feelings over the age discrimination and a further £5,700 in aggravated damages.

At the Tribunal ruling, the judge is reported to have commented that the injury to Mrs Sturdy's feelings was "about as serious as it gets".

Even though the damages awarded in the case were substantial, they fell a long way short of last week’s headlines in a number of tabloids that Mrs Sturdy stood to receive up to half a million pounds in compensation.
