Age Discrimination Tribunal Awards Averaged Under £3350

20 March, 2009

The average compensation awarded by Employment Tribunals in successful age discrimination cases averaged £3334 in the year to 31st March 2008.

According to data just released, between 1 April 2007 and 31st March 2008 Employment Tribunals accepted 2949 age discrimination claims – which meant that during that period, age claims represented 1.6% of all claims accepted by Tribunals.

Of the age claims accepted, over a third (616 or 35%) were withdrawn, 800 were successfully conciliated by Acas and 67 were struck out but not at a hearing. Just 56 age claims (or 3%) were successful at tribunal.

The maximum award granted in an age discrimination case during this period was £12,124. This compared with maximums of: £5,750 in a religious discrimination case £22,850 in a sexual orientation case, £68,991 in a race discrimination case, £131,466 in a sex discrimination case and £227,208 in a disability discrimination case.
